Marcus Bradley had been working for the local Lowe’s store for more than a decade as a delivery driver. He had gone to his job one day and everything was going along just as expected, but then something sinister took place. He was going to deliver an item to a customer’s home but a call came to the store telling him to bring the item back. Marcus didn’t know what was going on so he asked and was shocked to learn that the customer didn’t want the item delivered. It wasn’t because they had changed their mind, they just didn’t want a black delivery driver. Marcus and Alex Brooke, his partner, went back to the store and they replaced Marcus with a white driver so the delivery could take place.
Alex Brooke has spent almost 11 years working with Marcus and he was in the truck when they got the call. “To me, it just ain’t right for a business that we work at to go along with the woman’s wishes,” he said. He added that the store thought, “It was one of these things where the store said, ‘these guys will get over it, they’re tough guys, they’re delivery drivers.’” Brooks said, “I couldn’t do it with them.” Due to the situation, Alex would not go on the delivery without Marcus. A news team was then dispatched to the woman’s house to ask what happened. The woman had no qualms with saying that she made the call. “I got a right to have what I want, and that’s it.” She was asked if she felt bad and she said, “No, I don’t feel bad about nothing.”
Both Lowe’s and Home Depot have seen their fair share of problems but Lowe’s had always seemed to stand up for these types of issues. Unfortunately, they didn’t do so this time and it reflects poorly on the store and on the manager. Marcus feels as if he should get an apology. He’s upset that they wouldn’t take up for him and he hopes that they won’t do the same thing if it ever comes up again.
